Advanced Stroboscopy Workshop: Operations & Interpretation

Introduction. The Advanced Stroboscopy Workshop is designed for current stroboscope users. It provides instruction related to interpretation of stroboscopic examinations and clinical management based on exam findings. The course is offered as a part of KayPENTAX’s commitment to providing customers with operational support and continuing education in applications related to the company’s products.

Objective. The primary objective of this workshop is to help clinicians improve their interpretation skills of stroboscopic exams. Stroboscope users, either laryngologists, speech-language pathologists, or voice scientists, who would like to improve their understanding of how the stroboscopic exam is used in patient management decisions, are ideal candidates.

Faculty. Peak Woo, M.D., is an otolaryngologist in private practice in New York City. He has lectured widely and written numerous articles in the area of laryngology. Dr. Woo is well known internationally as a specialist in phonosurgery. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Stroboscopy, to be published in 2008.

Tom Murry, Ph.D., is professor of speech pathology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, and Clinical Director of the Voice and Swallowing Center. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Voice Foundation and the Pan European Voice Consortium. He is the author of numerous publications in the areas of care of the professional voice and swallowing and frequently lectures internationally in these areas. His two most recent books are The Performer's Voice and Clinical Management of Swallowing.

Format. Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. to noon, KayPENTAX customers are invited to have their stroboscopy instrumentation questions answered by our product specialists. For workshop attendees interested in this optional training, van pickup from the hotels (listed below) will occur at 8:15 a.m. on Friday.

The workshop lectures on interpretation, presented by Drs. Woo and Murry, will run from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Workshop attendees may elect to only attend these lectures if they do not have instrumentation questions. Van pickup (from the hotels listed below) for this portion of the course will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and 7:45 a.m. on Saturday.

Interpretation Section

• Standardizing recording protocol
• Normal vocal fold vibratory patterns
• Examination-induced abnormalities
• Range of normals
• Subtle abnormalities
• Interdisciplinary evaluation of voice problems
• Difficult-to-manage cases
• A “potpourri” of various abnormalities
• Examination interpretation from a laryngologist’s perspective
• Examination interpretation from a speech-language pathologist’s perspective
• Use of stroboscopy in office-based phonosurgery
• Interpretation of phonosurgery results
• Discussion of what’s on the horizon in laryngeal imaging
Review of participants’ difficult examinations

Location. The Advanced Stroboscopy Workshop will take place at KayPENTAX, 2 Bridgewater Lane, Lincoln Park, NJ 07035-1488. Our facilities offer a large meeting room and a separate demonstration suite. Several stroboscopy systems for the hands-on exercises and complete audiovisual equipment will be available. KayPENTAX is located about 25 miles directly west of New York City. Directions and instructions will be sent to registrants.

Registration. The registration fee for the workshop is $250. The fee includes workshop materials, refreshments, continental breakfast and lunch on Friday (for morning attendees), breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and dinner on Friday evening. Registration and payment of course fee are required a minimum of six weeks prior to the work-shop. KayPENTAX reserves the right to cancel a given workshop at any time up until thirty days before its scheduled starting date. The workshop is limited to 40 participants. Please call regarding availability. Refunds will be granted provided that a written notice of cancellation is received at least two weeks prior to the start of the workshop.

Continuing Education Credits. KayPENTAX is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology. This program is offered for .9 CEUs (Advanced level; Professional area). ASHA CE Provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.

Acoustic and Aerodynamic Instrumentation Workshop
Clinical Applications for Speech and Voice

The primary objectives of this workshop are to increase clinicians’ proficiency in the operation of acoustic and aerodynamic instrumentation, and to enhance clinicians’ understanding of how acoustic and aerodynamic data are used in a speech/voice clinic to aid in patient assessment and treatment.

Format. Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. to noon, KayPENTAX customers are invited to have their acoustic and aerodynamic instrumentation questions answered by our product specialists. For workshop attendees interested in this optional training, van pickup from the hotels listed in this brochure will occur at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

The workshop lectures on application, presented by Drs. Gress and Stemple, will run from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Workshop attendees may elect to only attend these lectures if they do not have instrumentation questions. Van pickup (from the hotels listed) for this portion of the course will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and 7:45 a.m. on Saturday.

Subjects Covered. This workshop is designed for speech-language pathologists, laryngologists, and voice scientists who would like to become more proficient in the operation of acoustic and aerodynamic instrumentation and the application of these instruments in a speech/voice clinic.

Acoustic Analysis Topics:

  • General operations of the Computerized Speech Lab (CSL) and available software options

  • Capturing, saving, editing, and retrieving speech data

  • Overview of available analysis and visual feedback tools  

  • Voice typing using spectrography

  • Applications of the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP)

  • Using Real-Time Pitch for assessment and treatment

  • Usage of other clinical software options for specific populations (e.g., professional singers)

  • Clinical examples of speech/voice assessment and treatment using acoustic analysis for various pathologies

  • Using acoustic data for patient reports

Aerodynamic Topics:

  • General operations of the Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS)

  • Rationale and use of each built-in protocol

  • Practical considerations for reliable data collection and  results

  • Interpretation and reporting the data

  • Typical aerodynamic/pressure data profiles of various pathologies

  • How aerodynamic/pressure data complement acoustic and imaging data
